About Paula

Paula Petcu is a data analyst with a particular interest in data science, information retrieval and search technologies. She is currently working with structuring, processing and analysing clinical data at an international pharmaceutical company. Previous to that, she has been specialising in enterprise search at a growing IT consulting company providing search-driven solutions. Her MSc project, FindZebra, a specialised search engine for finding diagnoses to difficult medical cases, has received media coverage in The Times, The Guardian, New Scientist, and Search Engine Land.

Paula obtained her MSc degree in Computer Science from University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2011. For her masters thesis she worked on using Information Retrieval (IR) techniques for developing a vertical search engine focused on rare disease diagnosis. The search engine is now called FindZebra. A very motivating research project and she continued to contribute to the further development of the search engine for the years that followed.

Her work on FindZebra was featured in MIT Technology Review, The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, New Scientist, Smithsonian.com, Search Engine Land, NetworkWorld and many other, including a mention of the project on the national Austrian radio channel.

Besides her interest in IR research, she worked as an Information Access Consultant at Findwise - a growing IT consultancy company providing solutions based on enterprise search technologies. While focusing mainly on open-source and enterprise search technologies from Microsoft and Google, daily challenges allowed her to explore other search-related technologies as well. She was also a speaker on search-related topics at conferences or at afterworks, and the Regional Research Manager in Denmark for the consultancy company.

She currently works as a data analyst at an international pharmaceutical company, implementing solutions to get more value out of clinical data. She develops and implements Spotfire dashboards for data analysis and visualizations that support decision making, and supports other departments in accessing and analysing their data.

Paula lives in Copenhagen, Denmark since 2009 when she came with an Erasmus scholarship from Timisoara, Romania.
